Dear JPA Members:
As a follow-up to last week's alert regarding Chicago's proposed beverage tax, JPA Staff would like to inform members that the proposed ordinance failed to gain approval at Wednesday's City Council hearing. Chicago's Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, did not commit to supporting the tax and the strong presence of opposed industry groups impacted the proposal’s appeal.
However, according to JPA contacts at the IIlinois Beverage Association, the tax could be included in Mayor Emanuel's budget when it is introduced on September 22. JPA Staff will continue to monitor the issue.
Please let us know if you have any questions. If you are a member doing business in Chicago and would like to become involved, please contact Jim Wolters at JPA Headquarters.
